Emergency School Closing

School Closing

Safety is always the primary focus in deciding whether to keep schools open and continue with learning in our classrooms. In the event that temperatures or wind chill fall below zero, we immediately bring students inside our buildings at morning arrival.  On such days, we also cancel any outside recess options. Our learning and schedule can go on within the warmth and safety of our schools.

On such winter days, please ensure your child arrives dressed in winter gear to safely make the walk from the carline to the entrance. If your child is a bus rider, bundle up and take note of any delays which we will share via our SchoolRush app.

The decision to close school due to inclement weather will be based upon available information from local law enforcement agencies, weather forecast services, bussing availability, and our communication with New Trier Township school district administrators. We consider the following factors as we make such a decision:

  • the safety and well-being of students and staff
  • the severity of the weather (extreme cold, excessive snow, flooding, etc.)
  • timing of the weather events and impact on staff arrival
  • the ability of buses and cars to travel safely
  • the operable condition of our buildings

In the event that a school closing is warranted, we will make every effort to notify families no later than 5:30 am. Please note, in the event of a school closing, we will communicate with families via:

In the event that conditions are unsafe for travel or unsafe within the schools, District 35 would use two snow days before we implement an E-Learning Day as approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. A snow day would be a canceled day of school. An E-Learning Day would operate as a full remote learning day with staff and students accessing their schedule remotely.

  • Grade-level instructions will be shared with parents and students by 8:30 a.m. on an E-Learning day.
    - Kindergarten - 4th Grade learning plan details will be shared via a SMORE E-Learning Newsletter

    - 5th - 8th Grade learning plan details will be posted on Schoology LMS

It is our intention to keep our schools open and our students actively learning in our classrooms on the winter days. As always, we encourage you to make the decision that is best for your own family. The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority, and we will only hold school when we can assure you that we are offering a safe learning environment.
