West Goes Green We Care Monthly Themes
New this year! Check out the Go Green website every month to participate in Go Green activities.
There will be an emphasis on monthly We Care themes as they relate to Go Green.
Stop by the Green Corner (in the front hallway) to find more information.
Questions? Just ask Ms. Molinari, Mrs. Boggs or Mrs. Salzman.
Let's get started!
March: Responsible Behavior
"Responsible world citizenship in relation
to people and place."
Did you ever dream that an old pillowcase could
become a tote bag? Reuse your old pillowcase by
decorating it and cutting a hole on both sides for
a place to hold your bag. You can also use an old t-shirt.
By using everyday items over again we help save resources.
Stop by the Green Corner and get some ideas.
February: Cultural Awareness
"Cultural affects on the environment and how
changes in cultural behavior may help protect earth."

Be fantastic and don't use plastic! Bring your plastic bags to the Green Corner
during the month of February and we will make sure that they are recycled.
Have you noticed all the shoppers using cloth and eco bags to carry their
groceries from store to home? Stop by the Green Corner and see examples
of other countries that also use cloth bags. Go Green goes world wide!
Here are some tips when you or someone in your family goes shopping:
January: Courage
"World environmental challenges that
need courageous peoples' solutions."
CLICK HERE:To_make_a_Milk_Carton_Bird_Feeder.pdf Milk cartons will be collected
and rinsed at lunch. If you need help making your bird feeder just ask Ms. Molinari,
Mrs. Salzman or Mrs. Boggs. If you decorate your bird feeder remember
that it will be outside in all kinds of weather. Please bring your completed bird feeder
to the Go Green Corner. We will provide the bird seed.
December: Self-confidence
"Feeling pride for taking care of resources
and our earth."

out the Conservation Checklist and start to check off all the ways that you are
conserving resources. Return your completed check list to the Green Corner.
November: Helping Others
"Good global citizenship and assisting others
in efforts to care for earth."
October: Making Healthy Choices
"Our health and earthly consequences."

Snacks are a great way to keep our bodies fueled as we go
through the day. Check out the nutrition label on your favorite
snack and then download/printout and fill out all the information.
How does your snack rate? Are you making a healthy choice?
Drop off your completed label at the Green Corner.
September: Teamwork - Building a Respectful Community
"Lending a hand to save our land."

Be a part of the West School Go Green Team! Just download/ print out
the chart and check off all the ways you Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle at home and at school
every day for the month of September. Then bring your completed charts to the Green Corner.
Students from Mr. Johnson's class came to 4th grade
lunch and showed the group their charts for September.
They are implementing their "Green" choices at school and at home.
Great job!
Go Green Club Going Strong
Be Seen Being Green
All Ready to Recycle at Lunch

The new school year is off to a Great Go Green start! Our two "Recycle Stations" are being put to good
use by the students. Liquids are emptied, milk cartons collected, compost materials sorted, recycles are in
their bin and trash is being reduced. The student Recycle Monitors are doing a good job
assisting students and taking compost materials outside to the the Green Cones and the tumbler.
Go Green
Did You Know?
The Green Cone is Here!
A new compost system was introduced to the students during lunch.
The Green Cone accelerates or speeds up, natural decomposition of
organic material. A hole is dug and the bottom part of the cone is
underground. The students will put organic material in the cone
through an opening in the top. The cone does not need to be
stirred and the small amount of residue left over after decomposition
goes into the soil as fertilizer. The Green Cone also works during the winter months.
Big Green Machine!
One way students at West School are "going green" is by composting. Yes, West School has a compost tumbler! It is conveniently located near the playgroud and basketball courts for students to help maintain throughout the year. At lunch, students place their organic waste and lunch remnants into compost buckets. The contents of these buckets then gets dumped into the compost tumbler. Mrs. Berkoff's third graders have also been adding soil and leaves to the compost tumbler several times a week to help improve the drainage and aeration of the compost. West School is hoping to use their compost in their garden this spring. Check out some of Mrs. Berkoff's "organisizers" in action.
Waste Free Wednesdays
West School has a Waste-Free Lunch Day every Wednesday.
On our Waste-Free Lunch Day, students will be asked to bring lunches that
include as many items as possible that can be eaten, reused, recycled, or composted and as few
items as possible that must be thrown away.
You can help your child pack his or her waste-free lunch by including only what your student
can eat, using reusable containers. And don't stop after just one day of packing waste-free! Pack your child a waste-free lunch every
day and pack your own waste-free lunch for work.
Did you know that a typical American school lunch generates 67 pounds of trash a year? Families across North America have started packing waste-free lunches. Here is what you can do to reduce your lunch waste:
Waste-Free Lunch Tips
Include:
Sandwiches in reusable containers
Whole fruits without packaging
Drinks in containers that can be reused, such as a thermos
Snacks purchased in bulk and brought in reusable containers
Cloth napkins and reusable silverware
Don't Include:
Disposable forks and spoons
Plastic baggies that are not reusable
Individually wrapped snacks
