Welcome to West Goes Green!
This year the West School community is working together to promote
environmental and ecology awareness and initiatives. This website will reflect
the efforts of the Go Green Club, the Lunch/Recess Council and all the students
and staff working at lunch and in other areas of the school to Go Green!

Spring is Going to Be Green at West
Earth Day Events

The playground is decorated with drawings of the earth and other important symbols for Earth Day.
West School students celebrate Earth Day by decorating grocery bags with Earth Day
messages. The bags will be re-used by patrons at Grand Foods in Glencoe.
Recycle Station #2 is here just in time for Earth Day!
Waste Free Earth Day Wednesday!
The Green Corner has all the information on Earth Day and Arbor Day.
Stop by and learn the history of each occasion and how you can contribute and
honor these special Green events.

The lunchroom has 2 new recycle stations especially designed for West School student recyclers!
Students can now place their trays down and "do the recycle glide", stopping to dispose of their liquids, organics,
recyclable material, and garbage. Built to accommodate the height of 3rd and 4th graders,
the W.R.S. (West Recycle Stations #1 #2) was also planned and created to improve efficiency. Thanks to Mr. Rudy Jimenez
and all the custodians for building the station and assisting with recycling. Going Green for spring is easy and fun!
Leaves and yard material from Mrs. Salzman's yard help the tumbler to
decompose lunch waste. The Green Cone is located on the south side
of the building and does not need any materials added to it. Thanks to
Mrs. Salzman and West School students for assisting with composting efforts.
Go Green Club Going Strong
The Go Green Club mosaic is making great progress.
Thanks to all the students who have worked on the mosaic
and saved bottle caps from going to landfills.
The Go Green Club and West School art teacher, Mr. Fischer, have joined together to reuse all the bottle caps that the club has collected this year. Mr. Fischer designed a map of the world on a large piece of plywood.
Club members are defining the outline of the continents with the different colored caps.
This will be an ongoing project for the Go Green Club at West School.
Soon this marvelous mosaic will be hanging in the main hallway.
The Go Green Club is sharing their news and exciting projects in the main hallway. Located right next to The Green Corner,
this bulletin board is the perfect spot for students and visitors of West School to check out and learn what the club is doing. More...
Ready to Recycle in 2009

First time in 2009! Every Wednesday West School adds more students who bring a Waste Free Lunch for the first time.

Lunch/Recess Council keeps in going green in February! Fabulous Foreign Foods for February also includes
keeping it waste free. Council members encourage students that have never brought a waste free lunch to "go for the challenge".
Go Green Club Report
The Go Green Club is collecting bottle caps and crocs. Club members made posters advertising the collection. We hope all students and staff at West School will begin collecting these items and bringing them in to school. By recycling these items, we can help our school and our environment. We are going to make a collage out of the bottle caps that you collect. We hope to display that collage in one of our hallways at West School. The crocs you collect will be returned to the company that makes the crocs. They will then grind them up and make them into new crocs that will be sent to children in other countries around the world who do not have shoes. Please help us recycle and reuse these items.
The Green Cone is Here!
A new compost system was introduced to the students during lunch.
The Green Cone accelerates or speeds up, natural decomposition of
organic material. A hole is dug and the bottom part of the cone is
underground. The students will put organic material in the cone
through an opening in the top. The cone does not need to be
stirred and the small amount of residue left over after decomposition
goes into the soil as fertilizer. The Green Cone also works during the winter months.
October is Healthy Choices Month!
Students recognize We Care for October by bringing nutritious meals to lunch.
Many of these meals are also waste free. Check out our Cool Kids with Cool Containers.
Reusable sandwich wrappers are replacing baggies and foil for keeping foods fresh.
Green Bag Lunch Begins!

Green Bag Lunch makes it debut. This year the PTO is offering a lunch that is healthy for kids and the environment.
The packaging is all biodegradable and the food is organic and non-allergenic.
Big Green Machine!
One way students at West School are "going green" is by composting. Yes, West School has a compost tumbler! It is conveniently located near the playgroud and basketball courts for students to help maintain throughout the year. At lunch, students place their organic waste and lunch remnants into compost buckets. The contents of these buckets then gets dumped into the compost tumbler. Mrs. Berkoff's third graders have also been adding soil and leaves to the compost tumbler several times a week to help improve the drainage and aeration of the compost. West School is hoping to use their compost in their garden this spring. Check out some of Mrs. Berkoff's "organisizers" in action.
Early Bird "Recyclers" at Lunch!
Go Green starts Early at West! Before lunch begins, 3rd graders are arriving in the lunch room
to learn about what and how to recycle at lunch. More...
