Safety Rules                                                  

General Rules:

1)     Please stay  at lab station until given permission to leave

2.     There is to be no disruptive unsafe behavior in class.

3.     Pupils are not to handle materials on the demonstration table, except under the direction of the teacher.

4     No students are allowed in the storage rooms unless supervised by a teacher.

5.     Do not put any solid or non soluble materials in sinks, (i.e. dirt, oil, rocks, glass) Dispose of all materials in the manner the teacher instructs.

 

 6.     Safety goggles are to be worn whenever heating with any kind of heat source, when using corrosive chemicals, and when working with gasses under pressure, or flammable

7.    Do not turn on gas valves or water unless instructed to do so. Electrical Safety

8.     In removing any electrical equipment from the socket, pull the plug, not the electrical wire.

9.     Never touch an electrical appliance or outlet with wet hands.

Fire and Heat Safety

10.    Do not touch or carry any burning or heated device.

11.   Whenever working with open flame, long hair must be tied back.

12.    Do not heat any container system which is closed or would not allow expanding air or gas to escape.

13.   Always use a clamp, tongs or gloves to handle hot objects. Do not reach across a flame.

Glassware Safety

14.    Do not handle broken or chipped glass, tell the teacher and dispose of as directed, (lubricant)

15.    All glass tubing or thermometers should be put into the stoppers wet with glycerine and held with cloth, so they do not stick and break.

16.    In removing glass tubing or thermometers from stoppers - cover them with cloth.

Chemical

 

17.    Do not touch, taste or smell any chemical or substance unless specifically told to do so. If instructed to smell a substance, use a wafting motion, do not smell directly.

18.    If any chemical or material is spilled on you, wash off the spill with plenty of water and report to the teacher immediately.

19.   Any time you work with chemicals in the lab, wash your hands well, as soon as you are finished.

20.    Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so.

Animal Safety

21.    Do not cause pain, discomfort, or injury to an animal.
