Facing History and Ourselves

"Never be indifferent...the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference." Elie Wiesel

Today we begin our study of the Holocaust. We will be using a variety of materials and resources anchored by curriculum developed in cooperation with Facing History and Ourselves and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. We strive to guide our students to understand how indifference and hatred function and how they can be stopped.
Goals:
* explore the consequences of hatred
* learn to recognize bigotry and indifference
* meet exemplars of courage and compassion in the face of injustice
* see that their own daily choices can have major impacts and perhaps even be a critical link to a safer future
(Facing History and Ourselves)

This study must be personal, must be understood from the individual's own point of view to be meaningful. Each student will be reading one of four Holocaust memoirs as well as keeping a journal. A calendar of student assignments can be downloaded by clicking on "More."

Homework due this week:
Tuesday 3/2: Journal Entry 1: Street Calculus and "Little Things are Big"
Wednesday 3/3: Journal Entry 2 Make your own ID chart then ask a parent, sibling or good friend to make one for you
Thursday 3/4: Memoir Reading #1
Friday 3/5: Memoir Reading #2

Due next Monday 3/8: 20 pounds activity and Journal Entry 5. Journals will be collected for grading.
